ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Arts Center of the Capital Region is partnering with Troy Central School District and School 2, to produce a painted two-dimensional mural on the site of School 2 (470 10th St, Troy, NY 12180). The mural will be approximately 9 feet high by 150 feet long. The Mural will be featured in the side parking area of School 2 facing an important one-way thru road. Due to its location and size, this mural will be a constant presence to the School 2 and the surrounding Troy community.

With a large emphasis on community and student input, this mural will convey a message of transformational growth to the community-at-large. The students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community, will see their ideals and hopes within the imagery of the mural. The fabrication of the mural also plays a role in weaving together a strong connection of School 2 to its Community through Input Meetings, as well as, Community Paint-in Days.

ABOUT THE PROCESS

On May 6th, 2022, Muralist Ramiro Davaro-Comas spent an entire day inside the Art Room of Troy City School District School 2. Throughout the day he met with over 70 children ages K-5. He gave them prompts regarding their favorite things about themselves, the school, and community as a whole. The kids responded with drawings, images, and words.
After the school day had ended, Ramiro met with various Community members to get their input on what they would like to see represented within the mural.
Of the 80 images, ideas, and drawings given to Ramiro on that day, 60 are represented right in the mural. Many of the drawings the kids had made are traced onto the design exactly as they were drawn by the children.
The Mural is also greatly influenced by Maya Angelou’s poem “And Still I Rise” with text from the poem throughout the design alongside the children’s and communities images.
The Community then came together again on June 4th, 2022 to help paint the mural.
The mural is a project of the Arts Center of the Capital Region, funded by the Ingalsbe Family Donor Advised Fund and the American Rescue Plan Act distributed through the Troy Now Initiative.
