Public art

Art in public places plays an important role in building community and activating environments. We develop projects that range from short term installations of art in public plazas to major infrastructure improvement projects. Every project is unique in its development process, partnerships and alliances, and creative expression. It is guided by our master plan for public art for the City of Troy, commissioned by the City and administered by the Arts Center.

The Troy Now Initiative is the City of Troy’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) initiative to manage, direct, and execute projects for the betterment of Troy residents.

Troy Now investments will support significant investments in revitalizing the City’s parks and recreational infrastructure, business and workforce development efforts, increasing home ownership, expanding youth programming, fostering tourism, and invigorating public art projects.

The Arts Center is partnering to bring public art into Troy’s neighborhoods.  Our first projects will be in Lansingburgh and South Troy.

Current Projects

Troy ART BLOCK

Troy Art Bock is a new Troy public art landmark we produced in October 2023. We curated and produced 28 temporary murals in downtown Troy, on two blocks of Church Street between State and Ferry Streets. Our goal is to create new murals in Troy Art Block every two years, creating a rotating outdoor art gallery for all to enjoy.

Past Projects

Troy Glow

In December 2022 we produced a dazzling winter lighting festival, Troy Glow that featured 14 light art installations around Troy’s downtown commercial district. Troy Glow brightened the darkest month of the year and invited tourists and shoppers to revel in Troy’s timeless beauty.

Franklin Alley

A team of property owners, architects and city agencies worked together to renovate this now walkable and engaging alleyway. Artist Joe Iurato’s mural references Troy’s history, industries and communities in his iconic style.

School 2 community mural

We partnered with Troy Central School District to produce a mural on the site of School 2. With a large emphasis on community and student input, the mural conveyed a message of transformational growth to the community-at-large.

The Uniting LinE

The Uniting Line was a multiphase project that transformed a 500 foot stretch of road under the Hoosick Street Bridge and revitalized an area that was negatively impacted 50 years ago when the bridge was constructed. The mural, Gems of Troy by Jade Warrick, was completed in 2021.

From Troy to Troy

This mural program was developed in response to the protest murals created in June 2020. Artists who live or work in Troy were invited to submit mural concepts that spark meaningful dialogue between the artist and community, and among the community itself.

#Hopespringseternaltroy

Artist Chad Kleitsch transformed the facade of the Arts Center with a large-scale installation of scanography: a photography process using a digital scanner as a way to rediscover image making. Portraying botanical objects through this technology, Kleitsch evoked elements of biology, illusions of light and the humanity of each subject. This project developed in 2020 as a means of raising morale during the pandemic.

Shapeshift

Shapeshift, by Adam Frelin, is an experimental piece developed in anticipation of our 2022 Troy Glow light festival. It was created for the River Street entrance to Waterfront Park. When viewed from River Street, this space—created by a gap between buildings—functions like a stage with a controlled vantage point and back drop, as well as a fourth wall created by the brick entryway.

COMMUNITY WINDOWS

Community Windows was a beautiful expression of hope and community created by Poet D. Colin and artist Angela Cuozzo.
