From Troy to Troy

From Troy to Troy is a public art project conceived in response to the protest murals created last June. Artists who live or work in Troy are invited to submit mural concepts that spark meaningful dialogue between the artist and the community, and among the community itself. The murals will use intentionally placed text and/or imagery that speak to the Troy community to foster a deeper connection with its shared experience. The chosen artists, whether residents or invested professionals of Troy, will create murals that present opportunities for expression, discourse, and unity.

Artists Eugene O’Neill, Toast Halasz, and Kim Tateo have created three wonderful murals that were created to spark conversation and community identity for our surrounding Troy Community.

About the Artists

Eugene O’Neill is an artist of many hats with a spirit motivated to utilize art as a source of healing for others. He works alongside passionate creatives of the Capital Region to establish mural opportunities that are accessible for youth of color and emerging artists. The mural “At the push of a button” was made with the intention to help you find grace in a world that is grieving; it invites you to reach your hand out when needed, because you’re deserving even when you feel detached.

Eugen’s Mural is called “The Push of a Button”

Toast Halasz is a 3D print and design artist. He has over two decades of experience with various plastics, plastics recycling, adhesives, weatherproofing and fixtures, 3D printing, CAD, and design software. Toast has rooted himself as a local artist and manufacturer, collaborating with numerous local businesses in a city that was built on (and for) makers. “By using 21st century technology to manufacture an art piece which is truly symbolic of this city, and then installing it on a structure made from the very same bricks it represents, I feel that this mural would be a full-circle symbol of the resurgence in Troy’s spirit of making, doing, and building.”

Halasz’s mural is called “Trifecta”

Kim Tateo is an artist, musician and educator living in Troy, NY. Tateo explores connections of the seen and unseen and works in all mediums including paint, glitter, watercolors, pastels, plants, and anything that creates color.

“Everything is Connected” is meant to be a reminder of our interconnectedness to each other and the Earth. In an ever-divided world, we can look to nature for beauty and inspiration. The mural draws the viewer to look through the window, not only viewing the piece from the outside, but to imagine breathing between these spaces. Blacklight responsive paint allows the painting to glow from within, a playful reminder of our own inner light.

“Everything is Connected” creates a moment of pause. Not only to look at the bright colors or flora, but to look within and hear the conversations of our heart and think of our larger belonging to one another. It is an invitation to dream of possibility and abundance for all.
