Adding colored stains to a white claybody, such as porcelain or BMix5, can open a
world of possibilities for making unique slab and wheel-thrown pieces. This
workshop will provide an introduction to the use of colored clays, including how to
mix stains with the clay to produce a colored claybody, how to combine and throw a
combination of colored clays to make agateware (also known as Neriage or swirlware)
which create a variety of marbled aesthetics, how to carve agateware to accentuate the
marbled pattern, how to combine and form a combination of colored clays to make
Nerikomi, which are slabs with unique patterns, and how to use colored clays for
appliques and inlays.
