Introduction to Furniture Making ***HVCC***

Learn the practical application and basic knowledge of wood using hand and power tools to make standard furniture joinery. Once learned, you will make a Stickley table, Shaker shelves, or a bench perfect for your home. NO CLASS 3/27 AND 4/3.

Introduction to Woodcarving ***HVCC***

Learn the basic techniques of relief and letter carving as well as the rudiments of working in the round. You will also learn how to sharpen and maintain your tools, how to apply finishes, and acquire an appreciation for wood as a material and how this informs the way it is worked. Come enjoy the feel and beauty of finely crafted wood, the refreshing smell of the workshop, all the while engaging in the absorbing joy of carving. NO CLASS 3/28.

Advanced Furniture Making ***HVCC***

Learn properties of various woods and inlay processes. Focus on the aesthetics of form as well as function. You will design and make a final project incorporating all learned techniques. Prerequisite: Intro to Furniture Making. No CLASS 3/31.

Learn safe techniques to carve a “Comfort Bird” and a “Dala Horse” out of wood. Roughouts or blanks for each project will be provided by the instructor. The course will also cover the methods needed to achieve and keep a sharp edge on your knife, the nature of wood itself as a medium for carving, and the rudiments of finishing to give your projects a polished look you can be proud of.
