Create ceramic art pieces using soft and “leather” hard slabs of clay. In this beginner’s class, you will learn how to roll slabs and form them into mugs, pitchers, and vases. An extruder is a clay tool that passes clay through a tube to create hollow or solid coils. The hollow extrusions can form mugs, vases, or sculpture and the solid coils make wonderful handles and creative decorations on pieces. In this class, you will combine extrusions with slabs to make one-of-a-kind works of art!

Stoneware, named after its dense, stone-like quality after high-temperature firing, is tougher and more durable than earthenware. Through lectures, wheel throwing, and handbuilding, you will explore the aesthetic, sculptural, and functional possibilities of this medium. Ceramics and the Human Form

Explore techniques to illustrate on the surface of clay, including sgraffito, inlay, mishima, hydroabrasion, stamping, and the use of underglazes. If you are currently working in 2D and want to branch out into 3D, this class is for you! Participants will use handbuilding to create 3D canvases; those with wheel skills are welcome to create thrown pieces as canvases, but instruction on wheel technique will not be provided. This class is about exploring techniques, so come with a desire to experiment! NO CLASS 4/19.

Raku: Alternate Firing

In this class you will throw forms to be fired using the raku process. Raku is a process by which pottery is fired at a relatively low temperature and then moved while hot to a closed container with combustible materials (such as paper or sawdust) that ignite and cause a reaction, creating colors and patterns in the pottery's surface. Pots will be burnished, brushed with Terra Sigillata, and burnished again before being bisqued. Please note, firing will take place off-site at the instructor’s residence.
