Learn to gild and paint in the ancient Byzantine tradition using egg tempera, rare natural pigments, and 23 ct gold leaf on a specially prepared wooden panel using the image of Saint Michael the Archangel. In ten classes, taught by Master iconographer, Christine Hales, you will complete an icon of your own which will last for centuries, while learning the history and theology of the icon, and viewing work by modern international iconographers. The steps of transferring a drawing and using the yolk of an egg to paint in layers are demonstrated and individual attention is given to each student. All levels welcome! Students will be responsible for bringing a gesso board, which can be found at http://www.religious-supply.com/shop.php3?cid=18 and either the 8 x 10″ or 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 ” are recommended, but all other materials will be provided. Students who sign up late can purchase a gesso board from the instructor.
