FENCE SHOW GUIDELINES

WHAT IS THE FENCE SHOW?
Now in its 52nd year, the Fence Show got its name when members’ artwork was exhibited on the iron fence surrounding Washington Park in Troy, the original location of the Arts Center. In 2016, we accepted 382 pieces, including paintings, drawing, photography, fiber arts, stained glass, and sculpture. The artwork is displayed salon style (floor-to-ceiling) in our galleries, and all levels of skill and ability are represented, from novice to professional. There is a separate category that welcomes submissions from young artists in grades K-12. We invite you to be part of the tradition!

JUROR
Each year, we invite a juror to choose artwork for the Fence Select, an exhibition curated from the works in the Fence Salon. Michael Oatman, local artist and educator from Troy, NY, will serve as this year’s juror. He will identify approximately 50 pieces from the Fence Salon that will later become the Fence Select, and remain on display for several weeks after the Salon ends.

Michael Oatman has been making and teaching art for over 30 years. After receiving his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, he moved to Troy in 1989 to study at UAlbany for his MFA in painting.  He currently teaches in the School of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Oatman has exhibited his work internationally and at significant American venues including MASS MoCA, the Tang Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the DeCordova, among others.

AWARDS
We will be awarding a total of $3000 in cash awards, including Best in Show who will receive $600 and a solo exhibition at the Arts Center in 2018. The awards support artists of all levels of experience, and are made possible through the generous support of Karen & Chet Opalka and the Marcelle Foundation.

JOIN US! THE ARTS CENTER GALA
The Fence Show will coincide with the Arts Center’s signature fund raising event, the Arts Center Gala, on Wednesday, May 17 at 5:30 PM. Fence Awards will be announced, and participating Fence Show artists will be eligible to purchase tickets at the discounted rate of $75.

ELIGIBILITY
The Fence Show is open to all members of the Arts Center whose membership is valid through June 30, 2017. Memberships can be renewed at any time before or during drop-off. See the reverse side for more information about membership.

Students K-12 are welcome to enter the show either as part of their school, or as individuals, with a student membership valid through June 30, 2017. Schools are allowed to enter up to five student works for an entry fee of $35 per school (equivalent to a student membership). The juror will identify several pieces to be assembled into a smaller Student Select exhibition, and Student Fence Awards will also be given.
