This is a class for anyone who has ever said, "I can't draw" (but wished it were otherwise!). In this introductory drawing class for new students as well as those looking to build on a little experience, you will develop and refine skills and increase your powers of observation. Students will learn at their own pace while following a structured course with emphasis on self-discovery and skill development, as they investigate a broad range of drawing materials. Students leave with a greater confidence and the skill to move on to more drawing or painting classes.

Learn the fundamentals of drawing. Complete beginners or artists with some experience can work at an individual pace within a structured format. We’ll do some fun exercises to shift you into the creative right side of your brain and gain confidence expressing yourself on paper. This class is an excellent preparation for a painting class or other drawing classes.  

Observational Drawing Sampler

Learn all the basics of drawing from observation in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. You will learn about perspective and proportions of basic forms such as cubes, cylinders, cones, vases, and more.  These simple forms will become the building blocks for more complex still life arrangements and subjects. Learn how to apply value to your drawings to capture the effects of light on form. The class will finish by spending several classes experiencing figure drawing with a model.

Immerse yourself in an afternoon figure drawing experience offered in the open-studio tradition. The Arts Center faculty will be available for discussion, but no instruction will be provided unless requested. Draw from live nude models posing for quick, action-oriented gesture drawings, as well as longer poses ranging from 20 minutes to one hour. Improve your figurative drawing skills, build your portfolio, or simply have some fun! All levels welcome. Bring your own paper and pencils or other dry media. Drawing boards and easels will be provided. Preregistration is required.

Advanced Beginning Drawing

Still Life Drawing, Light, and Shade

Learn how to create the illusion of depth, while learning proportions and composition. Gesture sketches, contour line drawing, and techniques for shading will be explored, including crosshatching and graded tone. Express your own response to still life arrangements.

Intermediate Drawing
