Maybe you’re putting together a portfolio of work to apply to an undergraduate creative writing program. Or maybe you’re deeply committed to improving your writing. Or maybe you just think it sounds like a lot of fun to immerse yourself in the written word for a week! Whatever the case, we’ll spend this week diving into the most important aspects of the writing craft: language, voice, structure, setting, character, and image–building blocks of all genres of creative writing. Each morning you’ll begin with a writing exercise to get your pen and your mind warmed up. We’ll transition into a daily seminar (forget about your stuffy English classes!) where you’ll examine works of well-loved writers whose work we will mine for ‘how-to’ data. Each afternoon we’ll workshop student writing, strengthening our work through constructive criticism and revision. Each day will be committed to thoughtful meditation on what it is writers do. By the end of the course, you’ll have a polished portfolio of writing, ready to send out for publication or application.
This class will be taught by Olivia Dunn, a Visiting Assistant Professor of Writing at Skidmore College. She holds an MFA in Nonfiction Writing from the University of Iowa.
