Many professional artists, illustrators, designers, naturalists, archaeologists, inventors, architects, and writers regularly keep a journal or a sketchbook. But anyone can benefit from using this tool. In this camp you’ll learn the practice of keeping a sketchbook as a place for developing artistic skills, exploring ideas, and making interesting connections. Are you a beginner who would like to try your hand at keeping a sketchbook for the first time? Or maybe you have a sketchbook but you’ve never quite known what to do with it. In this camp, you will to learn how shapes, lines, mark-making, and shading techniques are used in the practice of drawing. Natural objects will be brought into the studio for you to draw from observation. Weather permitting, we may also take outside sketching excursions along the Hudson River, and out and about in Downtown Troy. You will be shown examples of many different kinds of sketchbooks and many ways to fill them. Discover what your sketchbook will become for you!
