“On-One Salsa: Introduction” is a social dance class which introduces new dancers to the fundamental steps, partnering technique, and history of On-One Salsa. “Salsa” is a word often used to describe Latin Music developed by Puerto Rican artists from New York City in the 60s and 70s who incorporated rhythms from a diverse range of sources — Afro-Cuban percussion, latin music, and jazz, among many others — into their own unique sound. Similarly, salsa dancing has drawn from an equally diverse set of sources, some as far-reaching as California, USA. “On-One” salsa in particular is heavily influenced by the salsa scene in Hollywood and Los Angeles, CA. As a result, “On-One” is also commonly called “LA” style salsa, and is the style that is most commonly danced at social events. With that diversity in mind, come prepared to be social and have fun!

david (dah-VEED) aloka was born and raised in Latin America — Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela — and brings that heritage to Latin dance instruction. Having studied social Salsa, Bachata, and Argentine Tango for nearly ten years in New York City, Boston, and LA, david has been teaching salsa workshops and classes in the Capital Region since 2013. Beyond personal dance practice, david also makes music with Ensemble Congeros and the Berkshire Bateria, while working with dance companies, musicians, and theatrical groups to develop body-movement controlled performance technology.

Vivian Hwang has fifteen years of Latin ballroom competition and performance experience, having trained in Boston and Albany with world-renowned ballroom coaches. In recent years she has focused on social dancing styles — particularly salsa and swing. Vivian has taught ballroom at the collegiate level, and has also choreographed for community musical theater productions. She particularly enjoys working with dancers new to partner dancing, and helping them develop skill and joy in their dancing.
