The Jane Altes Gallery

Our main gallery is dedicated to the memory of Jane Altes and her lifelong passion for civic engagement, public & professional service, arts and the humanities.

In her storied career, Jane served as a tenured faculty member at Southern Illinois University, where she worked her way to Research Director and finally, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. She also served as Vice Chancellor for Academic Programs at the State University of New York (SUNY) Systems Administration. Her career also brought her to a position as Vice President for Academic Affairs, and eventually Interim President at SUNY Empire State College.

Wherever Jane went, her abiding sense of community followed. Jane married Wallace “Wally” Altes in 1966 and the couple relocated to the Capital Region. Jane and Wally fell in love with the area, and became deeply involved in a number of prominent local charitable organizations. Jane’s service record includes many years as a board member and chair here at The Arts Center of the Capital Region, among a number of other nonprofit institutions.

When Jane and Wally moved to Troy in 2007, their commitment to living downtown at The Conservatory was essential to the Collar City’s early revitalization. At the time, a flagship adaptive reuse project transforming an historic department store into modern apartments was still a novel and unproven concept in the Capital Region. Jane brought with her an appreciation for history and the arts that is foundational for Troy’s blossoming identity. In many ways, the City of Troy may not be the same today were it not for Jane’s early vision and philanthropy.

Here at the Arts Center, Jane’s imaginative & adventurous legacy inspires and guides us. We are proud to unveil the Jane Altes Gallery, featuring a small collection of her personal works that were made in our classrooms and studios.

We hope this Gallery will continue to serve as a testament to Jane’s life and her commitment to the creative spirit of the Capital Region.

Primary Sources is a collaborative exhibition between Shae Meyer and Angus McCullough, combining paintings and sculptures in an immersive installation. Rather than encountering these works in a traditional white cube, viewers will encounter them in a dimly lit labyrinth, spinning, pulsating, and glittering beneath spotlights, making the act of viewing emergent, unknown, and expansive. This process of discovery mirrors the studio processes used to create the work.

Shae’s works, called Apoptosis Residue, are made with acrylic, spit, and charcoal, among other materials. Rather than imposing a predetermined image or form on the canvas, the imagery is the result of physical forces acting freely. Physics determines how the paint and materials fall, allowing air pressure, viscosity, gravity and surface tension to create the resulting image.  They are not directly representative, but because they follow these universal forces, they reference phenomena at various scales, from cellular structures all the way to massive nebulas.

Angus’ sculptures, called Dirt, Moisture, Theft explore three primary materials of global consumerism: shipping wrap, expanding foam, and enamel paint. The forms are created through an active casting process, where the foam wants to take the shape of its flexible container, and the shipping wrap tries to stretch around the malleable foam. They reach unpredictable equilibriums, and each one is unique. This process produces seemingly organic forms out of these two derivations of petroleum. Once dry, they are painted in an equally uncontrolled way, using hydrographic techniques. Their surfaces are reminiscent of candy, sports jerseys, cars, and advertising, but resist solid identification.

These works were created separately, but both rely on experimentation. They elevate the agency of “stuff” to produce unplanned results, a reminder that when you work with primary sources, your research may take you to unexpected places.

Tara Fracalossi: An Atlas

Paired Provisions Dinner | MAR 22, 2023 REGISTER HERE
Reception | MAR 31, 2023 during Troy Night Out
Master Class | APR 11, 2023 6pm-9pm REGISTER HERE

Through photographic installations, videos and multi-image pieces, Tara’s work explores the nature and meaning of images, archives and language. The ongoing work, Postcards to Myself, is a byproduct of the pandemic’s early isolation when Tara turned to her iPhone to document her daily small world goings-on while utilizing online consumer printing services and the US Postal Service.

Now in its second year, Postcards to Myself further explores the nature of image making while questioning ideas of what photographic ‘quality’ truly means. The works in this exhibition include both the postcards as well as a new series of ‘super enlargements’ of the original post cards that utilize consumer printing services and accept the degradation of the image.
