Sports Photography

August 4, 2014 — 09:30 AM to 04:30 PM Instructor: Cindy Schultz

Want a quick introduction on what it takes to be successful at Sports Photography? Let Times Union photographer Cindy Schultz help you get there! We’ll meet at 9:30 AM sharp at the main gate to Joseph Bruno Stadium, move to a meeting room, and talk about the logistics of covering a baseball game, like where we’re allowed to go, what activities to photograph, technical aspects of freezing motion, and more. Then we’ll have to get into our positions before the 11:00 AM start (the National Anthem, team introductions, first pitch) and then the start of the Valley Cats game! Students will also be able to rotate onto the field with Cindy, one at a time, to experience photographing from the dugout. We will be photographing at the game from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and then meet back at The Arts Center’s Digital Arts Studio from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM to download our work and start to sift through the many images. Cindy will talk about editing and cropping and then we’ll do a group critique and finally a wrap up. After the class, the Valley Cats will put the students’ best photos online and promote them. Students should bring their cameras and lenses, including long lenses (like a 300mm lens) if you have one, and be proficient in their camera’s use. Students must provide their own transportation to the stadium and The Arts Center, and provide their own lunch.

Photojournalism Workshop with Cindy Schultz

August 16, 2014 — 10:00 AM to 04:00 PM Instructor: Cindy Schultz

In this six-hour introductory to photojournalism workshop, we’ll move beyond taking aesthetically-pleasing pictures and look at telling visual stories. We’ll meet Times Union photographer Cindy Schultz at The Arts Center at 10:00 AM for an hour and discuss how to frame photos with a story in mind, how to approach subjects, privacy and ethical issues, and getting caption information. Then we’ll break into small groups, get our photo assignments for the day, and shoot for about two hours in the Troy area. We’ll go to places like the Troy Farmers’ Market, a kooky antique shop, or a children’s spray pool. We’ll take pictures with a news angle in mind, take some notes and identify the people in our photos – just like real photojournalists. After a break, we’ll meet back at The Arts Center to cull through our work, find our most successful images, share our experiences, and have a group critique. Students should have a DSLR, or check one out from The Arts Center, and have proficiency using it. Bring cell phones to stay in touch.
