Digital Arts

Utilize the resources of The Art Center’s digital arts studio to explore stop motion in this one-day workshop. Develop skills with a digital SLR camera, lighting techniques, storyboarding, animation and basic video production. This workshop is about being a playful and resourceful storyteller. No advanced software skills are required for this session.

Adobe Photoshop is a tool that can be used by artists working in all media, to document, archive, and market their work. In this class, participants will learn how to use Photoshop to accomplish everyday artist related tasks, such as creating a postcard or poster to advertise an exhibition, retouching photographs of their work to present professionally, and creating imaged for use on the web. During this class, participants will learn and acquire the skills needed to use the program to serve artist-specific needs and the knowledge to continue using Photoshop on their own.

This course will define and clarify the functions that are found on most digital SLR cameras, shooting techniques, and an introduction to digital viewing and editing on the computer. Students will learn about depth of field, aperture, exposure, light meter, quality settings, shutter speeds, and basic composition. Students can bring their own DSLR camera, or use one at The Arts Center. Please bring a USB flash drive to save your work. No class 7/4.

This super condensed “crash course” will introduce students to top photo editing program, Adobe Photoshop CS5. Participants will go over basic editing techniques including basic image management, working with layers, resizing images, cropping; color correcting, and saving for various outputs. Participants will need: 10 personal digital images, flash drive or CD/DVD for saving work, and a notebook. This is also a great refresher for someone with Photoshop experience, but wants to become more familiar with the latest version, but students with no prior experience are welcome. Participants must be comfortable with basic computer operations. Mac experience is helpful, but not required.

Join us for an exciting collaboration between downtown Troy neighbors The Arts Center and Design It Together. Students will work in The Arts Center’s digital arts studio (265 River St.) from on 6/26 from 6:00 – 9:30 PM to create their own unique design for a t-shirt or poster using Adobe Creative Suite design software. The following Saturday, 6/29 from 1:30 – 5PM, the group will meet at Design It Together (291 River St.) and learn about the process of silk screen printmaking and print their own their t-shirt or poster under the expert guidance of Ben and Taylor. No design or printmaking experience is necessary to participate. Space is limited to five students, so please register at least two weeks in advance.

Participants will become adept at using the various tools and will learn basic editing techniques including basic image management, working with layers, resizing images, cropping, color correcting, painting, color effects, and saving for various outputs. Participants will need: 10 personal digital images, flash drive or CD/DVD for saving work, and a notebook. Participants must be comfortable on the computer and basic operations. Photography workshops will be led by Katherine Wright, and design workshops will be led by Ben Karis-Nix.

In this workshop, students will be introduced to the elements and principles of basic design. Part history lesson, and part art class, students will learn about design in the world we live in (the good and the bad) and create a variety of projects including logomarks, posters, mailers, ads, and brochures. Through the study of typography, design concepts, and design problem-solving, students will learn about visual communication, creating and finessing a design and working with the creative process with a final product in mind. Using Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, we’ll work through basic design projects as well as view and discuss a variety of professional work samples. Participants must be comfortable with basic computer operations. Mac experience is helpful, but not required.

This training course covers an introduction to Final Cut Pro X for film editing techniques. This class will cover organizing media files, preparing to edit your story, editing in the magnetic timeline, advanced editing techniques, audio work, titles, effects, compositing, color correction techniques, exporting and sharing, and DSLR workflows. Participants must be comfortable with basic computer operations. Mac experience is helpful, but not required. Please bring your camera, at least 10 minutes of video footage, and a USB device or cardreader for uploading files to the computers.

Perfect your portraits! Students will be guided through various techniques for shooting portraits with natural light in outdoor and indoor settings. Working with focus, composition, environment and more, students will gain a better understanding of using the time of day to your advantage to create a stunning portrait. Basic knowledge of the use of a digital SLR camera is helpful, but beginners are welcome. The Arts Center can provide a DSLR camera for you to work with, but if you have your own camera, please bring it with you.

Creating, preserving, and sharing stories rich with visuals and sounds is a great benefit of the digital era. Whether you are new to the process or have a work-in-progress, this class will enable you to hone and produce a compelling experience for you and your viewers. Whether you are documenting part of your family history, sharing a passion, or highlighting an important issue, this class will give you the tools and focus to realize your vision. Simple blogging will allow you to host your content, foster dialogue and develop a community, small or large.

This workshop will cover the basics of documentary production from pre-production to post-production. Participants are encouraged to come to class with an idea for a documentary in mind. From there, we will do exercises to help make individual projects start to become a reality. This class will cover topics such as creative fundraising, securing a crew/help, and distribution.

In this super condensed “crash course,” students will be introduced to Adobe Illustrator CS5, the top program for creating vector graphics. Adobe Illustrator is great for creating posters, text-based imagery, polished drawings, maps, and more. Illustrator supports cross-media design and multiple graphics formats, and provides endless options to create impressive designs and artwork. Participants must be comfortable with basic computer operations. Mac experience is helpful, but not required.

This course will cover advanced topics using Adobe Photoshop CS5. Participants will become adept at using the various tools and will go beyond basic editing techniques. Topics include layers and masks, creating brushes, HDR (High Dynamic Range Photography), portrait retouching, background replacement, and more. Please bring 10 personal digital images, a flash drive or CD/DVD for saving work, and a notebook. Participants must be comfortable on the computer and basic operations. Basic knowledge of Photoshop functions and Mac experience will be helpful. No class 9/4.

In this super condensed “crash course,” students will be introduced to Adobe InDesign CS5, the top creative document publishing program. InDesign is the perfect choice for making any document that needs some creative layout, from posters to newspapers, magazines, pamphlets and more. It offers a variety of features to modify your text and images, which can work together in interesting ways to create a unique and professional design.
