Photography 101: Fully Utilizing the Functions of an SLR Camera
June 14, 2012 to July 19, 2012 — 06:00 PM to 08:30 PM Instructor: Katherine WrightThis course will define and clarify the functions that are found on most digital SLR cameras, shooting techniques, and an introduction to digital viewing and editing on the computer. Students will learn about depth of field, aperture, exposure, light meter, quality settings, shutter speeds, and basic composition. Students can bring their own DSLR camera, or use one at The Arts Center. Please bring a USB flash drive to save your work.

Photoshop for Photographers
June 18, 2012 to August 6, 2012 — 06:00 PM to 08:30 PM Instructor: Katherine WrightThis intensive eight-week course will introduce students to Adobe Photoshop from the point of view of a professional photographer. Participants will become adept at using the various tools and will learn basic editing techniques for photographers. Topics include including basic image management, working with layers, resizing images, cropping, color correcting, saving for various outputs, and more. Participants should have digital photographs to work from, a USB flash drive, and a notebook. Students are welcome to use their own camera, or use one at The Arts Center. Participants must be comfortable with basic computer operations. Mac experience is helpful, but not required.

Illustrator: A Crash Course
July 7, 2012 — 10:00 AM to 04:00 PM Instructor: Taylor GillisIn this super condensed “crash course,” students will be introduced to Adobe Illustrator CS5, the top program for creating vector graphics. Adobe Illustrator is great for creating posters, text-based imagery, polished drawings, maps, and more. Illustrator supports cross-media design and multiple graphics formats, and provides endless options to create impressive designs and artwork. Participants must be comfortable with basic computer operations. Mac experience is helpful, but not required.

Stop Motion Animation
July 10, 2012 to July 31, 2012 — 06:00 PM to 09:00 PM Instructor: Ira MarcksStop motion film making is a great form for creative self expression. Utilize the resources of The Art Center’s digital arts studio to explore this experimental medium. Develop skills with a digital SLR camera, lighting techniques, storyboarding, animation and basic video production. This workshop is about being a playful and resourceful storyteller. No advanced software skills are required for this session.

Off-Camera Lighting
July 21, 2012 — 12:00 PM to 03:00 PM Instructor: William GillLearn to control off-camera strobes and lights to achieve creative results outside the studio. This “crash course” will cover lighting with small, battery powered flashes, light-painting, and augmenting ambient light. Students will learn about controlling the hardness/softness, color and quantity of lighting. A digital SRL will be provided but if you own your own please bring it (tripods and off camera flashes are also welcome).

July 26, 2012 to August 16, 2012 — 06:00 PM to 09:00 PM Instructor: Ben Karis-NixLearn the basics of Photoshop CS5 while focusing on digital “painting” techniques. Course will cover strategies for drawing with Wacom tablets, creating and using textures in photographs and scanned artwork, collaging and compositing photographs with artwork, creating realistic ink and watercolor effects, and more. Beginner and intermediate Photoshop users welcome. Participants must be comfortable with basic computer operations. Mac experience is helpful, but not required.

This is also a great refresher for someone with Photoshop experience, but wants to become more familiar with the latest version, but students with no prior experience are welcome. Portraiture Workshop

Students will be guided through various techniques for shooting portraits with natural light in outdoor and indoor settings . Working with focus, composition, environment and more, students will gain a better understanding of using the time of day to your advantage to create a stunning portrait. Basic knowledge of the use of a digital SLR camera is helpful, but beginners are welcome. The Arts Center can provide a DSLR camera for you to work with, but if you have your own camera, please bring it with you.
