108 Sun Salutations: An Event Welcoming the Vernal EquinoxMarch 22, 2014 — 01:00 PM to 04:00 PM Instructor: Maria Bowers
Why 108? The number 108 carries spiritual significance in many cultures like; 108 has been considered to be a sacred number in Hinduism and in Yoga. In Vedic culture, 108 is viewed as a number of the wholeness of existence. This number is also connected to the Sun, Moon, and Earth where the average distance to the Sun and the Moon to Earth is 108 times their respective diameters. Traditionally, malas or garlands of prayer beads come as a string of 108 beads. Mala is used for counting as you repeat a mantra, much like the Catholic rosary. According to yogic tradition, there are 108 pithas, or sacred sites throughout India. There are 108 Upanishad(sacred texts) and 108 marma points(sacred points in the body).
So, on March 22, when the day and night are equal in length, we will welcome the vernal equinox. We will look forward to longer days, warmer temperatures and nature’s rebirth. The season of greens and pastels.
The 108 Sun Salutations is an ancient practice that is symbolic to embracing courage and clarifying intention. The process focuses on reconciliation–Have you ever noticed that the hardest thing to’ let go’ of are the things that drive us the craziest. Maybe we prefer the familiar rut to the unknown of moving on.
108 Sun Salutations are challenging, but the class is well-paced. We start out slowly, thinking about all the good things that we have accomplished, we gradually speed up–heating our core and refining our intention with an active letting go of every little hurt, doubt and fear and as we again slow down the pace we embrace and visualize our future intentions. We mark each of the 9 sets with with 4 creek stones–27 times 3 is 108. You do not need to do all 108 sun salutations–you can add energy to the room with beautiful rolling oms or hand drumming. All levels are welcome to participate in this event.
