Felted Fiber: From Functional to FrivolousOctober 29, 2014 to December 10, 2014 — 06:30 PM to 09:00 PM Instructor: Jeannie Thomma
Explore the magic of hand-felted wool! In this 6-week class, students will learn the ancient, alchemical craft of felting wool. Throughout the class we’ll play with form, function, color, surface, texture and adornment to create fiber art embellished with details of personal significance. Pursuing the creation of beauty, we’ll blur the lines between utilitarian objects (bowl, purse, scarf) and simply stunning art pieces, created solely for display. Each week, we’ll experiment with new felting techniques, including the incorporation of playful and unexpected materials into our finished wool works to yield beautiful textures. Students will build a felting skill-set that will give them the confidence to bring their creative ideas to life! Felting 101 workshop is recommended as a prerequisite for this class, but not required. Please see supply list on your class confirmation for additional supplies to bring to the first class session. No class 11/26. A master teacher for over a decade, Jeannie Thomma has lead workshops in the ancient art of hand-felted wool to over 7,500 students of all ages and abilities since 2001, and more recently has shared the wonders of weaving through workshops and private sessions. A sought after artist-in-residence, she was the recipient of an ArtsWestchester Arts Alive Grant in 2010, funded by the Decentralization Program of New York State Council on the Arts. She has taught at numerous nationally recognized art centers, including Westport Arts Center, CT; Brookfield Craft Center, CT; and The Katonah Museum of Art, NY. Since 2012, she has been involved with Make.Art.Work., a professional practice program for visual artists in CT, as the Project Manager and Coach to all of the Cohort Artist Members. No class 11/26.
