This week you will experience the magic and meaning of the art of different countries. Learn about the art of Russia, craft Egyptian mummies and African masks; create Chinese fans and dragons; make paper come to life by mastering traditional Asian paper folding, origami; and so much more! While you explore these and other artforms from a variety of cultures you will also have the opportunity to tell your own cultural story through such projects as the creation of a family crest based in Celtic design and symbols, a book about your heritage and a portrait that depicts your family and cultural traditions.

Drawing Portraits
February 22, 2012 to March 28, 2012 — 06:30 PM to 09:30 PM Instructor: Emma CopleyThis class will focus on the process of drawing accurate portraits. Working from live models as well as photo reference materials, students will learn about the head and facial structural proportions that we share, as well as pinpointing that which makes us unique. Students will learn proper facial feature placement through measuring techniques to create a likeness of the model. This class will prepare students for The Painted Portrait as well.

Pottery for 20 and 30 Somethings
February 22, 2012 to March 14, 2012 — 06:30 PM to 09:00 PM Instructor: John VisserCalling all 20- and 30- something’s! Join us for an introductory pottery course in a fun, social environment. In this four week course students will learn the basics of “throwing” on a potter’s wheel. Students will leave this course with finished projects. This hands-on course is a great opportunity to learn skills, meet new people and have fun!

Clay for Kids

In this exciting weekend class for kids, students ages 6-11 will learn to hand build with pinch pots, coils, and slabs. We will combine these three basic techniques to construct fun and whimsical creations with emphasis on form and texture. Each student will bring several glazed and finished creations.

Figure Drawing Open Studio
February 25, 2012 — 01:30 PM to 04:30 PM Instructor: Armando SotoImmerse yourself in an intensive afternoon-long figure drawing experience offered in the “open-studio” tradition. The Arts Center faculty will be available for discussion, but no instruction will be provided unless requested. Draw from live nude models posing for quick, action-oriented gesture drawings, as well as longer poses ranging from 20 minutes to one hour. Improve your figurative drawing skills, build your portfolio, or simply have some fun! This draw-a-thon is open to all levels. Bring your own paper and pencils or other dry media. Drawing boards and easels will be provided. Students under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Students under the age of 18 must have parent or guardian sign a release form. Pre-registration is mandatory for this class.
